Steel bars (rolled)

Stabstahl

Our steel bars are round, hot-rolled products manufactured to the highest quality standards and customer specifications, as a primary material for top-quality end products.

In our electric arc furnaces, we produce over 500 grades of steel, which our precision rolling mills then form into steel bars to extremely tight tolerances – all while keeping our CO2 emissions low. We can precision-adjust other specific material properties during heat treatment. We use various simulation processes and comprehensive materials testing to ensure that our steel bars meet the highest standards and expectations.

High-quality steel

Unalloyed or alloyed high-quality steels, such as fine-grained structural steels suitable for welding, are steels that must generally meet predefined requirements relating to e.g. ductility, grain size and/or formability. However, there are no special requirements for non-metallic inclusions or the degree of purity (unlike unalloyed or alloyed stainless steels). As a rule, high-quality steels are not intended for quenching and tempering or surface hardening. Unalloyed or alloyed stainless steels should be used for such applications.

Application examples:
Structural steel or steel construction elements

Quenched and tempered (QT) steel

Unalloyed or alloyed quenched and tempered steels, e.g. steels that comply with EN ISO 683-1 and EN 683-2, are generally used to produce quenched and tempered and flame-hardened or induction-hardened machine parts, but are also suitable for use in their as-annealed condition in some cases. Quenched and tempered steels are suitable for components that are subjected to high static or dynamic loads. Unalloyed quenched and tempered steel is used for parts with slimmer dimensions or under less load. For thicker dimensions and higher load requirements, we offer alloyed quenched and tempered steel.

Application examples:
Drive shafts, ball hubs, flanges, rotor shafts, connecting rods, connecting elements, linear systems, turbine and generator shafts

Case-hardened steel

Case-hardened steels, e.g. steels that comply with EN ISO 683-3, are steels with a relatively low carbon content for building components that are carburized or carbonitrided and then hardened. These steels are used wherever a combination of different properties is required, e.g. for gearbox or transmission components characterized by differing stresses on the tooth base and tooth face.

Examples of applications:
Gear wheels, shafts

Rolling bearing steel

Rolling-element bearing steels, e.g. steels that comply with EN ISO 683-17, are used for bearing rings and/or for rolling elements in which balls or rollers are used to separate the moving parts of the bearing. Rolling-element bearing steels meet predefined, highly exacting requirements in terms of hardness, hardenability, microstructure, degree of purity, and surface quality. This makes them suitable for the high surface pressures and variable loads to which rolling elements are exposed in operation.

Application examples:
Ball bearings, needle bearings, roller bearings, cams

Microalloyed steel

Microalloyed AFP steels are ferritic-pearlitic steels for precipitation-hardening from hot-forming temperatures, e.g. in compliance with EN 10267. They are used for components in which the required mechanical properties are set by controlled cooling from the hot-forming temperature by means of a ferritic-pearlitic microstructure (sometimes including small proportions of bainite and/or martensite) and by precipitation hardening. Components need no further heat treatment after hot-forming, which reduces processing costs and the potential for component distortion.

Application examples:
Connecting rods, pistons, injection systems, crankshafts, trailer couplings / ball rods

Chain steel

Chain steels, e.g. unalloyed high-quality steels or alloyed stainless steels that comply with DIN 17115, are intended for processing into tested welded round-link steel chains and individual chain parts. They meet predefined requirements in terms of e.g. hardenability, mechanical properties, formability and weldability. Unalloyed chain steels are generally supplied as non-heat-treated bar steel, whereas alloyed steels are supplied in soft-annealed or spheroidizing-annealed formats. The components are quenched and tempered.

Examples of applications:
Mining chains, offshore sector, ship chains

Nitriding steel

Nitriding steels, e.g. that comply with EN ISO 683-5, are generally intended for the production of machine parts that are quenched and tempered and subsequently nitrided. These steels contain controlled quantities of nitride-forming elements such as aluminum, chromium, molybdenum and/or vanadium. When the components are nitrided – i.e. heat-treated in an environment containing nitrogen either in the form of a gas or liquid salt – the nitrogen is diffused into the steel surface. This increases the component’s surface hardness, abrasion resistance and fatigue strength.

Application examples:
Gearbox or transmission components
